Government looks to the skills of an ageing
workforce [Australia]

The Australian government has launched a
US$38m “productive ageing” package aimed at enabling older workers
to stay in the workforce and pass their skills on to younger
generations. The funds will be used to provide careers advice and
training programmes for older workers, with a particular focus on
retraining older workers as trainers, supervisors and assessors of
apprentices. Currently 62% of Australia’s 50-69 year olds are in
employment, a lower rate than the UK, USA or Canada. The Australian
government hopes to raise this by 5% in the next 40 years, a feat
that would raise gross domestic product by 2.4%, or US$2,200 in
today’s terms.
