The City and Guilds of London Institute

As the UK’s leading vocational education organisation, City & Guilds is pioneering a talent revolution by inspiring people to unlock their potential and develop their skills. Working with over 8500 centres and training providers in 81 countries, we offer more than 500 qualifications across 28 industries and currently award around 1.9 million certificates every year. The City & Guilds Group includes: the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), the UK’s largest management body, combining industry-leading qualifications and specialist member services; City & Guilds Land Based Services, the UK’s biggest provider of land-based qualifications and licences to practise; and the City & Guilds Centre for Skills Development, working with researchers, practitioners, employers and learners to improve the policy and practice of vocational education and training worldwide.

Governance
The affairs of City & Guilds are governed by its Council, members of which may be ex officio, appointed by the Corporation of London and certain livery companies, elected or co-opted. A smaller Executive Committee, which meets four times a year, is made up of Council members, and Executive Committee members are City & Guilds’ charity trustees. City & Guilds’ Director-General is responsible for the executive management of City & Guilds and reports to the Executive Committee and Council. The Director-General works through a Group Board of Directors, who are full-time City & Guilds employees appointed by the Trustees, representing directorates and other members of the City & Guilds Group.

Royal charter
City & Guilds is a charity and has been operating under Royal Charter since 1900. Our surplus is used to develop qualifications and resources that are cutting-edge and completely relevant to the ever-changing workplace. We pioneer the most up-to-date delivery and assessment methods, furthering the skills agenda in the UK and worldwide through profile-raising, sponsorship and the initiation of innovative skills-based projects and ventures. Our vision is to enable people and organisations to develop their skills for personal and economic growth, creating a more proficient and sustainable economy. By working together, we can become the global benchmark for learner-centred skills development.

Group members
City & Guilds includes three different Group members. These organisations are part of the City & Guilds Group and run by our Board of Directors.

• Kineo is the global learning technology company recently acquired by City & Guilds.
• The Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) offers qualifications and carries out research into leadership and management skills at all levels.
• City & Guilds Land Based Services offers qualifications in agriculture forestry, animal care and all other industries in the land-based sector.
• Million Extra - our mission to collaborate with learning providers, employers, industry bodies, policy makers and government agencies to help ensure one million people start to shine and grow through apprenticeships by Summer 2013.
• Learning Assistant is an innovative, reliable and cost effective e-portfolio solution that allows centres to realise many benefits including: improved learner motivation, faster completions, better visibility and reduced delivery costs.
• Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) and City & Guilds joined forces to offer the 14-19 Diplomas in September 2008.
