Since 1878, City & Guilds has been committed to providing skills for prosperity, setting the standard for vocational education, and providing relevant and effective training for the workforce. Central to our vision is the belief that skills are key to improving the economic and social prosperity of individuals, communities, businesses and nations. 

The City & Guilds Centre for Skills Development (CSD) was launched by City & Guilds in March 2008 as part of the City & Guilds group but with a remit to be an independent, not for profit, research and development organisation. CSD is concerned with the role skills can play in improving the economic and social prosperity of individuals, community groups, businesses and nations. It seeks to be a catalyst between the myriad of stakeholder groups and to help translate research and share relevant case studies to influence policy and improve practice on a global scale. It also undertakes a number of skills development projects.

CSD’s programme of work has been shaped by the findings of its first international research project Skills Development: Attitudes & Perceptions. The project explored current issues faced by those with a stake in skills training around the world. Despite the range and breadth of countries surveyed, we discovered that there were four key themes common to all:

  • Employer Engagement
  • Quality of provision
  • Supply and demand
  • Poor perceptions of vocational education and training

These issues have formed our strategic priorities and all of our work seeks to make a contribution to each of these areas.
