In a new paper from the National Centre for
Vocational Education Research, Reskilling for encore careers
for (what were once) retirement years, the Centre argues the
need for VET to participate in re-skilling for ‘encore’ careers
through which people to stay connected with the workforce past the
age of 65.
The research notes the common desire among over-65 year-olds for
further work and for ‘meaningful activities’ that contribute to
society, and that this can be helped along through formal and
informal learning. The paper recommends funding should be earmarked
to support this learning, as the VET sector otherwise struggles to
meet the demand.
